Centering your subject
A trick I’ve used frequently is decreasing details around a subject to focus the viewers eye more on the subject. Sometimes the background is just a little too busy and It would be a nicer image with some Photoshop added direction. The image were going to use is someone making a cappuccino. The subject is him steaming the milk and the background is a bit busy.
Well start off by selecting the area thats interesting
Click and hold down on the thing that looks like a lasso and select the lasso tool (you might have another tool selected on that square so make sure its on the actual lasso tool)
Next were going to select the interesting part. I’ve added the rule of thirds to this image so you can see why I’m selecting what I did. Simply click and drag around the subject until your back to the point where you started and let go.
Next, right click on the screen and click “select inverse”. Note (if you are not on the lasso tool it wont show you this menu when you right click)
This will select the opposite of what you just selected. Now, right click again and select “feather”
This will bring up a new dialog box. Set the feather radius to 350 pixels and click ok. (hint: if your image is very low resolution you will want to feather it less)
Next were going to make a curves adjustment mask (1). Notice, on the curves layer its now showing the selected area of adjustment in white.
Click and drag up on the bottom left corner to adjust how much detail will be removed from the area we selected. Then to match the dark values of the rest of the image, click about 3/4 of the way down the line and drag it down. Adjust until it looks right. If it looks a little grey like in the above image, drag the bottom left corner to the right and it will restore some of the black quality.
This method could also be known as vignetting but its more controlled than that. Plus its affecting more of the image so to me it looks a bit more natural. After you have selected out your subject, add some contrast or color or whatever your flavor is!
