Hipster Effect Using Curves
This is a fun exercise to get used to the curves adjustment. You can fix alot of things in a photo with this simple tool. Well start by learning how to adjust the lights and darks of the image.
Click on the curves adjustment layer mask. It will make a new layer on top of your background. The bottom left corner of the line is the shadows, and the top right is the highlights.
By clicking and dragging the bottom left point upwards it will make the black values more grey. Alternately if you click and drag the top right corner downward it will make the whites more grey as well.
Here we have the standard S curve. You’ll come across this often with editing. Its a more precise way of adding contrast to an image.
The S curve is also how we get the hipster look in images. Adding a bunch of contrast and then making the blacks and whites more grey.
Depending on how hipster you are, you might want even more flattened highlights and shadows. So merge the existing curves layer with the background layer by holding down CTRL + SHIFT + E at the same time. Then create another curves layer mask like we did in step one. Click on the points on the graph illustrated above (1) and then drag the bottom left corner up and the top right corner down.
Ok, it looks cool, but it would be cooler if it had some color in it. Click where it says RGB (1) and select blue in the drop down menu.
Now drag the bottom left corner up a considerable amount and the top right down a good bit. Play around with this a bit, you can do the same thing with the green and red channel too, it will just give you a different result.
There you go! Now you can have high resolution instagram looking pictures. Hopefully the real lesson here was learned of curves basics. Happy Photoshopping!
