I want a good camera… what do I buy?
(Updated Mar 2019)
Just in time for tax season! I know many of you have holes burning in your pockets so here’s the short list. I’ve recommended this combo to pretty much everyone I know that’s starting out in photography and I’ve seen some pretty positive results! I emphatically recommend the a6000 camera body. For 2 important reasons: One, its small. And two, its incredible, it even comes in 4 colors!
They still sell this camera new with the kit lens on amazon however if this is your first camera Id recommend sticking with a used one. KEH, an online camera consignment shop, usually has a few in stock for around $350 in excellent condition. Ive never had a bad experience with them, and their customer service is excellent! Now the next part is what kind of lens to buy? Do not for the love of god buy a kit lens. They suck. You will take incredibly boring pictures with it. You need the nifty fifty. Every photographer on the planet has/needs one of these. And the Sony one is fantastic. The part number is: SEL50F18 and it will run you new in either black or silver, $250, or used from KEH, $175 in excellent condition. Now I want you to know this isn’t the cover all camera setup. Its geared towards quality not quantity. You cant zoom in, its fixed at one focal length. But its that sweet spot that covers a majority of what youll be shooting and give you that creamy background blur that everyone is after.
And that’s it. For around $500 you are all set. Here are some images taken with the a6000 and the 50mm.
Best of luck with your starter camera! Once you’ve gotten used to the 50mm for a while, Id say at least a year. Maybe expand into the wide angle arena. Good news, its cheap, the 16mm F2.8 is an awesome fast focusing solution and can be had for less than $200 used.
