My girlfriend and I were looking for some Saturday fun when I stumbled across an article about some abandoned railroad tunnels in Payson. The hike said it was pretty intense, and Payson wasnt far so off we went. The trip didnt go as planned and we got seriously lost in the middle of nowhere. Offroading for a solid 40 miles from forest road 300. The directions I had from the article were basically useless, but we saw some amazing views and had fun none the less. Forest road 300 is actually pretty amazing for a casual drive into the wilderness. Youll need an SUV with some ground clearance to make it though. It looked like a great camping spot, well definitely be returning to!
Forest road 300 takes you up some pretty high up terrain with some incredible overlooks.
A Forester in the forest… haha
Narrow path cut right into the mountain side
There was a forest fire a few miles away when we were there. It made the valley fill with fog and hard to see.
Stopped at a cliff side overlook to take it all in
By the time we gave up our search for the railroad tunnels the sun was setting through the trees. Thanks for reading! Hopefully if your in Payson and looking for something to do, this accidental discovery will inspire you to check it out.arizona, az, explore, payson, roadtrip, travel, travelblog, wanderlust, weekend
