Sony Camera Setup

So you just bought this mega beast camera. What the heck do you do with all those buttons?? This article will help make your camera useable and fast. The basic principle is 98% of the things you are going to use this new camera for are landscapes, people, or pets. Now this is a setup guide for the A7Riii but it will work for really any Sony camera, you just might not have all the features. If your camera is newer, you probably have a different menu order but the settings will still be the same.

Aperture – Set as low as you can

Drive mode – Single shot

Autofocus – AF-S

Focus Area – Flexible Spot: L

White Balance – Auto

ISO – Auto (100-1600)

ISO Auto Min SS – STD

Image Stabilization – Off (If you have old manual lenses)

Face/Eye AF Set – Off

Mode 2: People

Aperture Mode (A on the top dial)

Aperture – Set as low as you can

Drive Mode – Continuous Shooting: Hi+

Autofocus – AF-C

Focus Area – Wide

White Balance – Auto

ISO – Auto (100-3200)

ISO Auto Min SS – Faster

Image Stabilization – On (If you have native mount lenses)

Face/Eye AF Set – On, set to human

Mode 3: Pets

Aperture Mode (A on the top dial)

Aperture – Set as low as you can

Drive Mode – Continuous Shooting: Hi+

Autofocus – AF-C

Focus Area – Wide

White Balance – Auto

ISO – Auto (100-3200)

ISO Auto Min SS – Faster

Image Stabilization – On (If you have native mount lenses)

Face/Eye AF Set – On, set to animal

Use that guide above for pretty much any modern mirrorless camera but for specific A7R3 and A73 menu by menu setup see below!

Step 1: Set your cameras top dial to aperture mode (A) Set the lowest aperture you can because its going to store that value. I typically put my fastest lens on so that way it will always default to the lowest of what I have. f/1.4 for example.

Now to setup the People/ Portrait mode! Pay attention to the tab and the page number to get to the setting faster.

Now for the pet mode! Its exactly the same as people mode but you just need to change it to Animal mode in Face/Eye AF Set.

Lastly my custom menu. This is a personal preference and by all means set it to whatever you want. This is just to give you an idea of how mine is set up for the things that I shoot.

Now that you’re done with all that, all you have to do is switch between the numbered presets on the top of your camera! With people itll rapid fire while tracking your subjects eyes seamlessly, landscapes will simply focus on whatever the little square is on, pets will track as they move around with ease. If for some reason its not working properly, just put it back into its preset mode 1, 2, or 3, and itll be good to go again!

Hope that helps! If you have any questions or please leave them in the comments below!
